Co-curricular

Physical Education & Swimming Programme

All children are expected to participate in the school's physical education programme. Game skills are introduced from an early age and lead to more formal participation in the sports programme. In Term 1, Year 3 to Year 6 children participate in formal swimming lessons by qualified swim instructors at the Gatton Pool, with Prep to Year 2 attending lessons in Term 4. The swimming programme is offered in addition to regular physical education lessons.

In Term 1, students also participate in the Senior Swim Carnival, where they have the opportunity to showcase their swimming abilities in a competitive and inclusive environment, with events catering to all skill levels. In Term 4, the school hosts the Junior Fun Carnival, designed to encourage younger students to enjoy swimming and sports in a fun, non-competitive way, while also providing opportunities for all abilities to participate.

Throughout the year, other carnivals include Cross Country, Athletics, and Ball Games, all of which cater to students across all year levels. These events are designed to be inclusive and provide opportunities for all abilities to compete, participate, and enjoy a wide variety of sports and activities.

Our school is part of the Lockyer Zone Division, and selected students who excel in these events have the opportunity to progress to a higher level of competition within the Zone. From there, students may be selected to represent the school at the Darling Downs School Sport, competing against students from other regions in the district.

Additionally, students in Year 3 to Year 6 are given the chance to participate in the Catholic Swim Carnival in Term 4, competing with other schools in the region.

The school also participates in Interschool Sports and Gala Days with other local schools. These events provide students with the opportunity to compete in a range of sports, including Cricket, Kanga Cricket, Softball, T-Ball, Netball, and Soccer. These Gala Days are designed to promote teamwork, sportsmanship, and friendly competition, offering students the chance to represent the school while developing their skills in a supportive environment.

Languages - Japanese
We are proud to offer an engaging and immersive Japanese language program that fosters cultural understanding and communication skills. Our students explore the rich traditions, customs, and language of Japan, developing both linguistic abilities and a deeper appreciation for Japanese culture. From learning essential phrases for travel to discovering the values of teamwork and well-being through the theme of Genki (health and vitality), our program is designed to enhance students' global awareness and personal growth. With hands-on activities, collaborative projects, and cultural explorations, our Japanese curriculum inspires curiosity and prepares students to connect with the world beyond the classroom. Join us at OLGC School, where the journey into the Japanese language and culture is both fun and educational!

This year, Year 5-6 Japanese students will explore the theme of "Genki," focusing on well-being and teamwork to promote good mental and physical health. This exploration will involve discussions about Japanese culture, the significance of relationship building, teamwork, and the promotion of healthy minds and bodies.

Concurrently, Year 3-4 students will delve into Japanese skills relevant to visiting Japan. Students will engage in cultural learning, practice giving and receiving directions, and develop an ability to discuss and understand texts pertaining to the environment around them to assist them in planning and presenting a mock visitation promotion for a particular destination within Japan.

Arts
The Arts at OLGC involves deep engagement through the continuing and emerging practices in Visual Arts, Music, Dance, and Drama. From Prep through to Year 6, students engage in a rich curriculum designed to foster creativity, critical thinking, and historical and cultural understanding. At OLGC, we believe in the transformative power of The Arts to enrich our students’ lives. The Arts weave a rich tapestry of authentic disciplines, each with its own distinct practices and skills. Dance, with its creative choreography and captivating performances, celebrates the beauty of movement in inspired forms. Drama breathes life into stories, inviting students to create, perform, and immerse themselves in the world of performances and improvisational theatre. Music entices students with compositions and performances, through exploration of voice and percussion instruments. Visual Arts, through the strokes of a brush, exploration of textures in collage, or the moulding of clay, allows students to create and interpret visual masterpieces. Together, these art forms ignite our students’ imagination and inspire to explore, create, and transform the world around them.
